My family came from Castle Kelly in County Kilkenny in I think the mid 1800’s. His wife was Judith Lorillard, and they thought she came from England to live with relatives in Kilkenny. There is no local/historical mention/record of her according to the Kilkenny Family Office. They had four children, and then he dies, with her marring a man named McCabe who came with her and the children to the US. If anyone from Kilkenny can shed any more light on his, I would appreciate it |

Recently discovered after many DNA tests that McGraths are not only descended from Brian Boru but also a group of Mcgraths are descended from Niall of Nine hostages. I fall into the latter and we are a sub-sept of the MaGuires and came about in 1265 in County Fermanagh. I have found only 5 other McGraths with the same DNA to match this group as many fall into the Brian Boru group. Still a McGrath from Ireland. |

My dad, Frank, signed the book so I thought I would too. Like my dad, I was born in Vermont. Our ancestor Owen lived in Underhill, Vermont after he immigrated to the U.S. His son Michael lied about his age and joined the Union Army at age 16 and fought in the Civil War. Mom is the historian in the family and she is trying to trace our roots. So far we know we hail from Tipperary. Not much to go on considering McGrath is such a common name. |

What a wonderful sight! It was nice to see the McGrath castle near Pettigo. I have visited it back in 2001 where I purchased a book about Myler McGrath and the history of McGraths from a hotel pub owner in Pettigo. It was a lovely place. I also was excited to hear we McGraths love the water. I recently purchased lakeside property in Alaskas biggest national park, where I built a 12 by 12 cabin. It so interesting to know that some things never will change when it comes to McGraths and our love for water! Thanks so much for this site! I love hearing about our ancestry.. I still from time to time revisit my pictures of the Myler castle. I have one on the wall of my cabin! God bless and long live the McGrath Clan!!! |

Is the following relevant to you? My name is Daniel McGrath born Dublin and currently in London. I have been told that my paternal great-grandfather surname McGrath with first name possibly John or Daniel was born c.1820 in or near Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. The name of his wife is not known. He worked as a train driver and was said to have been the first to drive the Dublin-Cork train that started on 29 October 1849. He moved from Co. Tipperary to Cork City where my paternal grandfather Daniel McGrath was born c. 1861 in Spring Lane, Blackpool, Cork, who worked as boiler stoker on railways and later in North Infirmary and who died c.1930. Daniel married first Hannah Hayes(?) and they had a son John McGrath born c. 1892 in Cork who married Mary (May) McNamara. After Daniels first wife died young he re-married Hannah OBrien born Ballydaly, Millstreet, Co. Cork, who died c. 1960 and is buried in Rathcooney, Mayfield, Cork. They had five children including my father Cornelius Kevin McGrath, born 24 Feb 1921 in Cork, died 11 June 2001 in Dublin. If any of the above is relevant to you please reply to this post, many thanks for reading it! |

Hi, I am researching my family history. My family are McGraths from Westmeath. My two great granduncles Peter and Joe McGrath went to America in 1909, to Indianapolis, Illinois I believe. They had four other brothers - Hugh, Johnny and Jimmy and Michael (my great grandfather). Peter and Joe were the youngest. My grandfather thinks that Joe may have had a grandson or relative, a Fr. Rogers/Rodgers? Would love to hear from anyone who this may ring a bell with. |

I think his daughter was Bridget McGrath who went on to marry my Great, Great, Great Grandfather William Fergus. William and Bridget had 3 children, Bridget/Margaret (born 1851 - Bekan), Martin (1854 - Bekan) and Mary (1857 - Bekan). Martin married either in Ireland or the USA and had 2 sons John (born USA 1892) and Martin (USA - 1894). Apparently Martins wife died giving birth to Martin Jnr and Martin Snr then brought his sons back to Ireland to live with his sisters Margaret and Mary. Does anyone have any info on the McGrath and Fergus families? Thanks

Looking for info on Patrick McGrath who is shown on the 1846 Griffiths Valuation & lived in Cloontumper, Annagh, County Mayo.
His daughter bridget married William Fergus (my great great grandfather) and William is shown on the 1846 Griffiths Valuations and living in Cloontumper too. William & Bridget had 3 children: Bridget/Margaret (1851 - Bekan), Martin (1854) & Mary (1857).
Martin emigrated with his wife to America & their sons John (1892) & Martin (1894) were born there. The mother died & Martin Snr brought his sons back to Bekan, County Mayo to live with his sisters. He is shown on the 1901 census but not on the 1911 census - he obviously had gone back to America.
Any info on this McGrath family would be great. e-mail: ramsbottom936@btinternet.com |

Hi, There is another McGrath castle in Ardrahan, Co. Galway. The McGraths were thrown out of the castle by Oliver Cromwell and replaced by a Protestant family called Taylor. The Castle is now called Castletaylor. Legend has it, the family moved to the Peterswell area of Galway and I am a direct descendent of that family (although, not a McGrath myself). |

I am one 8 McGrath (adult) children. Grandparents Michael T. McGrath and Mary (nee O’Meara) McGrath were both born in Emly, Tipperary (Monmore and Bartoose). In 1999 thirty of us (spouses, children) traveled to Ireland for a visit with relatives we had never known. It was heaven. St. Albie’s Parish Priest Father Rochford was very helpful with history and is fairly certain that like thousands of others our family is directly descendant from the infamous Myler McGrath. I came across this site quite by accident. |

I just re-found this website and am just as enamoured with our history as I was initially, and just as astounded that I had made the decission to become a historian even before knowing that this was the task appointed to our lineage.
My family came to America in the mid 1800s and started with Thomas McGrath and his son Joseph McGrath who was married to Bridgit Lane. Im not sure where they came from in Ireland, and Im not sure what it was exactly that brought them to America, none the less the name McGrath was changed to McCrate on the ride over for that branch of the family and its fairly safe to say that any McCrate in America is a direct decendant of the McGrath line through Joseph McGrath. |

My grandmothers side is McGraths. I went to Ireland over the summer (08) and we went to Cashel Castle where I found the McGrath code of arms I thought it was really cool and then i found this site and if you look under the castles and cashel I was there and have pictures with the code of arms on the wall. I just thought this was really neat. and hello all other McGraths =) |

We are descended from a James McGrath born 1832 who wasa schoolmaster at Aghacommon, Derrymacash, Lurgan, County Armagh. His eldest son, Edward b 1861 emigrated to Canada and was possibly killed in the war. Does anyone know anything about him please?. Also has anyone come across the marriage of a Patrick McGrath to Annie McCabe in the Lurgan/ Armagh. Our family possibly also has connections pre 1832 to Banbridge McGrath families. |
