O'Grady's restuarant
O'Grady's is a busy family owned b & b cum restaurant on the road into Waterford city. The business has a steady international clientele, so they needed a robust booking system to keep track of it all. I created a Visual Basic application with a graphical calendar interface, hiding any complexity away from the user.
South East Computers
South East Computers was a computer retail outlet in Dungarvan, County Waterford, selling both components and full systems. After several issues with double-billing from suppliers, they decided it was time to implement a full inventory system, and I was contraced to develop the solution. I used Visual Basic for the system, and delivered it in 3 months, along with comprehensive training.
C-teck Manufacturing
An offshoot of South East Computers, C-teck was started to service a contract from a start-up delivering internet kiosks throughout Ireland. After the success of the inventory system for South East Computers, C-teck needed their own stock control system, which I duly provided, again using Visual Basic running against a database.
Bausch & Lomb : IT support dept.
After working for several months in-house to update the company's website, I was given the contract to develop a helpdesk system for the IT Support department. This needed to be accessible from anywhere within the plant, where ever problems might occur. The system went through two iterations, starting with a Delphi solution, but then moving to an Internet application using ASP. This provided better access from anywhere in the plant, without the need for any setup at individual workstations. The ASP runs against SQL server at the back-end.
Bausch & Lomb
During the course of my time sub-contracting in Bausch & Lomb, I also worked on a project for the Personnel department, creating a time management system. This was intended to be used as a record of the issues dealt with by clerical employees during the course of the day. It used the same ASP / Internet Server system as the Helpdesk system, and set up accounts for each of the 200 employees scheduled to use the system. Training and consultation was also part of the development process, and involved updating software installations at users workstations.

The Waterford Institute of Technology Students' Union has been in existence since 1976.
I have worked there since 1995, and in that time I have created between 10 and twenty posters, varying in size from A3 to A0, full colour and commercially printed.
My main job in the Students' Union is to produce the Union newspaper, which is called the Institute Examiner. You can read issues of the Examiner at www.sml.ie/examiner
I am nominally the Editor of the paper, but I also do the layout and design, and write articles, and do the majority of the photographs.
The Union newspaper became the Institute Examiner in 1998. Previous to that it was called the Grapevine, which I also produced. That was A4 and monochrome, and came out every week.
The Institute Examiner is produced in association with the Irish Examiner, and is tabloid in format, with around 6 pages in full colour. It comes out fortnightly, and is distributed free of charge to the 7,000 students and staff of Waterford Institute of Technology.
I have also designed various logos for the Students' Union over the years, responding to the changing focus of the organisation. This has included the graphics for posters and clothing for Rag Week, the charity fund-raising drive by students every year.
The Union produces a Handbook each Summer for the new intake of Freshers', and I have produced three of these. Two have been A4 with full colour sections, and the most recent was super A5. two colour throughout, with full colour inserts.

Vibe fm 107.4 Radio Station
From September 2000 to January 2001, I hosted a daytime talk and information show for one hour a week. This was my first exposure to broadcasting, and I loved it.
I interviewed and talked to at least four people per show, and had regular slots with local talent, including authentic Chinese Astrological readings.
In the course of this time I got to interview Christy Dignam of Aslan, a veteran Irish Rock band. The interview was aired the following day, and also ran in the College newspaper.
Others of note I talked to were the head of the Samaritans in Waterford, and Billy O'Sullivan, who coaches martial arts in the city of Waterford. He was recently on the Late Late Show, in a segment relating to the female bouncers he trains.
I later took on a second hour of a Thursday night, this time concentrating on the DJ aspect, and more into the music. |
